Economic Development Training for Elected Officials

This workshop is specially designed to provide an overview of what local economic development is about. Not quite “Economic Development 101”, but this session covers the basics and is geared to elected officials and others appointed to economic development committees and boards.

Topics to be covered include:

What is municipal Economic Development? - “Growing the Pie vs Slicing the Pie”
Urban Planning and Economic Development – Two sides of the same coin?
Typical Economic Development programs and activities in municipalities
Role of Elected Officials and staff
Economic Development performance measures

Presenter:

David Cash; David is a Past President of EDCO and has spent over 30 years working in
various municipalities in Ontario – first as and Economic Development Officer; then as
Planning Commissioner and most recently working directly with Councillors as CAO. He
brings this unique experience and understanding to this workshop and to the topic of
Economic Development.

EDCO has also interviewed local elected officials to gain their advice and comments.

Video clips from these interviews are featured in this workshop. For example, Mayor George Bridge from the Town Minto, provides his unique comments a local and county perspective.

This workshop provides great training opportunity for new Councillors (or for citizens appointed to economic development committees or boards) or as a refresher for those returning to their previous positions.
